Ever since I learned Jack Tillar's "Blister trick" in Tarbell, I have thought it was a pretty cool piece of mind-over-matter magic. Tillar's original concept was that the magi would burn his finger with a lit cigarette, and show the resulting blister; then, using the healing power of his mind, he would cause the painful blister to vanish from his once again unharmed fingertip. (If you are not familiar with the effect, look it up in Tarbell volume 7. If you do not have a full set of Tarbell's, you should buy that before you buy any other magic!)
Over the decades since Tillar created the Blister trick, it has been "improved" by others who think all magic must include a chosen card, and so there are versions of the Blister trick in which your fingertips blister in the shape if a selected card. It is a neat revelation of a card, but let's face it... a blister in the shape of a card value doesn't really look like a blister anymore. It just looks like a raised card value on your fingertip. So for those times when I perform the card-blister effect, I don't present it as a blister -- I simply squeeze the deck between my finger and thumb, saying that my fingertips are hyper-sensitive to messages from the cards. When I show the card value impression on my fingertips, it is (as I said) a strong and memorable card reveal.
But now, here is PSIONIC -- an ESP symbol version. The spectator chooses one of five Zenner symbol cards, and concentrates on the symbol. You press your fore finger gently against her forehead, and when you bring it away, the symbol she is thinking of has appeared on your fingertip. For my money, this is a GREAT way to use the blister trick concept. The idea that you can somehow pull the thought from her head, and she sees it on your fingertip... well, it is is memorable mental magic.
(I tried to show it in the photo of my finger, but hard to get a good shot -- the gimmick produces a clear and solid impression of the chosen symbol. And by the way, it is not the same symbol every time).
To be clear, since I talked about playing card reveals in my long introduction to Psionic, please note: there are no playing card reveals with Psionic. Only symbol reveals.
Psionic comes with an instructional DVD, five symbol cards, and the necessary gimmick for the symbol revelations.
